Dig a hole about twice as wide as the pot with the plant. Place the plant in the hole so that its base is at ground level. Gently loosen and spread all the roots that are fueledbyramen15 wound around the plant. Feed compost, cover soil, water and mulch to retain moisture and nutrients. The grasses are usually quite tough, but over the past few years new plants have been watered to establish it’s healthy roots. As with most perennials, they tend not to grow in the first year, but tend to reach their full growth by the third season in the ground. Once they have grown, they are quite resistant to drought and tolerate it perfectly. Do you need to restore decorative herbs? Absolutely. If you don’t, they tend to become like rat tails. Trim cool seasonal grass in early spring, rake dead leaves or trim the entire plant about four centimeters above the crown or base of the plant. Cut the herbs of the warm season in late winter or early spring if you prefer to leave the seeds in place to provide a winter Wonderland in your garden.
If your grass is too large for its location, if the center of the cluster looks dead, or if the plant is flexible and sprawling everywhere, it’s probably time to separate your plants. Instead of trying to dig it all out, use a shovel to dig the grass outside, and cut out small patches on the outside edges. Replace parts elsewhere. It is best to do this before the active plant growth cycle begins, so it is in early spring for cool seasonal herbs, and in late spring for the grass of the warm season.
